Self Empowerment

I don't know if you remember but I attended a workshop with you last May 1998 in Victoria with a small group of women. I am using Brain Gym in my classroom, as well as in my personal life. Actually, I have this story to tell you. The very first time I went to my baseball game, after my course with you, I thought I'd give Brain Gym a whirl. So I did my basic daily routine prior to the game. Well, I'll be darned if that game I didn't play my best ever! In one inning alone I got all three outs (which is absolutely unheard of for me ... I'm lucky if I get one out per game). I was pitching that game and I got a strike out for the first out. Then for the second out, there was a high fly ball that I caught even though I usually do a Charlie Brown. And the third out was a ground ball that I scooped out of the dirt and fired to first base instead of my usual wild (I've got to hurry and get it there) throw. My team mates even noticed a difference in me. One friend said, "I have been watching you play ball for 20 years and you are playing the best that I have ever seen." Pretty cool! Of course I told him all about Brain Gym! For the past two years, in my classroom, I have included Brain Gym on a daily basis. We do our basic daily routine during a time that we call "Catch the Calm" when we play very quiet music with the lights out. It's amazing the amount of Silent Reading that the children are then able to sustain after our Brain Gym session. I have also discussed with the children that if at any time they are feeling stressed in any way or that they have a big game or performance that they are nervous about that just remember their Brain Gym. I thought that you might be interested in a copy of an e-mail that I received from one of my Grade 4 students that was involved in a Highland Dance competition this year:

Hi Mrs.Van,

Thank-you for the e-mail. I did brain gym® before we went to the competition and it worked. The competition was at Spring Wood Midldle (sic) School. I went in 3 dances and I won in all of them. For the Fling I won 3rd (sic). For the sword I won 4th. For the Lilt I won first. I am so proud of myself. That was Saturday. On Sunday it was very calming and I was glad because I was tired. What did you do on the weekend?

Well that's all I have to tell you.

See you Thursday. Bye Bye for now.

From Amanda.
